Question about updating games

After patching, if later there is a new update for the game, how can I update it without losing my game progress?

just install the apk as update and repatch it

Have you tried it? I heard that you can't do that because the new apk won't recognize the installed patched apk. Is this true?

And if it's still possible to install the apk as update and repatch it, then will I lose my progress?

I always update the app through playstore or through apk and never lost my game data/progress as it is cloud stored. even if it isn't don't think you will lose it. You can apply patch to android too.
